This indicator shows the total percentage coverage of terrestrial and marine areas by protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECM). Tracking the coverage of protected areas and OECMs enables assessment of progress towards one element of Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework; for at least 30 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas, and 30 per cent of marine and coastal areas, to be within protected areas and OECMs by 2030.
Data on protected areas and OECMs are submitted to UNEP-WCMC primarily by national governments and compiled into the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA; formally the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and World Database on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (WD-OECM)). They are disseminated through the Protected Planet platform, which is a joint product of IUCN and UNEP, managed by UNEP-WCMC.
