This indicator measures the total number of active economic instruments in place that provide incentives to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity, including:
a) Biodiversity-relevant taxes, fees and charges
b) Biodiversity-relevant environmentally beneficial subsidies
c) Payments for ecosystem services (number active)
d) Biodiversity-relevant tradable permits (number active)
e) Biodiversity offsets (number of active mandatory schemes)
Data are sourced from the OECD data base on Policy Instruments for the Environment (PINE), which is regularly updated for OECD members, accession countries, key partners and a growing number of non-member countries.
